My design was inspired by liminal spaces, those eerie, transitional environments that feel neither here nor there. For the fictional Grief Centre, we aimed to make everything feel subtly off, from the unsettling emptiness of the space to the colour palette, which was drawn from the shifting hues of bruises, purples, greens, and yellows, to echo the emotional stages of grief. I also created a range of in-world graphics to help build the identity of the centre and add depth to the environment. Sam Shepard is about two estranged brothers, Austin and Lee, who reunite at their mother’s house and become locked in a tense rivalry over a screenplay and their different lifestyles. As they compete for success and control, their identities begin to blur, revealing their shared frustrations and the unstable idea of the American West.&nbsp; I reimagined this as a film for my Minor Project of my final year studying Production Design. I chose it because I’ve always been drawn to 1970s design and was excited to explore that era visually. I focused my research on the specific region of California where the story is set. I designed a claustrophobic living space with a slanted roof, small windows on one side, and large windows on the other, looking out onto suburbia and an empty pool. I also storyboarded a key scene where the story reaches a boiling point, using the set to heighten the emotional pressure between the characters. Drawing inspiration from the 2000s, our approach was rooted in ideas of vibrancy, play, and personal expression. We imagined the bedroom as a constructed, slightly surreal space, filled with colour and eclectic details that represent EFÉ. This included a round bed designed to function as a trampoline, a fishtank with fake fish, an orange flower rug that I made, and a dreamlike room built entirely from curtains rather than walls. Even within this altered space, we wanted it to feel recognisably real, with pictures and collages hung throughout, reflecting the visual language of a teenager’s bedroom. Next to the main bedroom, we designed three neighbouring rooms that are seen throughout the video, each representing a different character and routine. One features an older couple, with laundry hanging up and a newspaper turned upside down. Another shows a “nerd” on a 7am Zoom call, framed by a blue background and specific table decor. The third presents a young gym-goer, practising his lifting on a weight bench. I worked as production designer alongside Jess Sammon, creating three studio sets for the project: a casting room and reception area, an apartment, and a bedroom. We were involved in the full art department process from initial research and concept development through to construction, painting, dressing and on-set adjustments during filming. The casting office was designed as a clean, structured environment that contrasted with the more personal and worn-in apartment, which drew on Georgian interiors in Dublin and reflected the lives of the characters living there. All sets were built in the IADT workshop using flats, painted and finished by hand, and then installed in the studio. capture the song’s atmosphere, emotional depth, and whimsical quality into visual form. The lyrics inspired a story connected to nature, with strong visual elements of water and fire. My goal was to use SketchUp and V-Ray in an illustrative way to create concept art for two dreamlike sets. The first features a bed floating in a pond, surrounded by nature and ruins, loosely inspired by "Die Toteninsel" by Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin. The second set, underwater, depicts the ruins of a burnt Victorian house. winning "prettiest smile." My walrus has bedazzled teeth, Farrah fawcett hair, giant glasses to make the eyes more prominent and a flowy blue chiffon dress from the 70s. I made it by moulding a nose out of clay, which I then poured into a latex prosthetic. I painted and "flocked, " a procedure where you blow tiny little hairs onto a surface to further make it more realistic. Song 4: To Be Sung on the Water (The Waterman) is visually told in the following way: Hundreds of painted white balls spill out of a bathtub with crow's feet. It blurs the line between reality and the feverish dreams of the mad king. The bathtub symbolizes the king's lost childhood, the fractured psyche, and obsession with the pressure of being a king. "The Dark panelled banquet hall is lit by hundreds of candles; a fire blazes in the huge fireplace; a long polished table is covered entirely with orange and yellow sugared flowers." With my main focus on a historical but also very expressive set and costume, I designed a "sugarcourse" in a Banquet hall inspired by Elizabethan Architecture. I first created concept art for both the set and the costumes of Orlando and Elizabeth. I then made a 1:25 model with Autocad and a Laser cutter, which I then painted and decorated to fit the historical visual research.
